As IT infrastructure is moving to the cloud it requires a much more flexible and reliable storage system then can currently achieved by using RAID or data replication. That's why in the DAAS solution, we offer the unique 'Distributed Storage' technology, patented by Amplidata.

How does it work ?

To guarantee highest availability, the Distributed Storage System (or DSS) stores data from DSS clients across a selection of disks that are widely distributed across storage nodes. While traditional storage systems typically store data to disks that are within the same storage system or storage server, the Amplidata DSS will strive to store the data widely distributed across different disks, in different storage nodes which are potentially in different racks or sites if the DSS is deployed across several geographical locations. Due to this distributed storage strategy, failure of a single component such as a disk or a storage node has minimal impact on the overall data availability.

The way data is distributed across the available storage nodes is policy controlled. For each data set, you can decide the number of nodes that need to be included in the data spread and the number of simultaneous disk failures in this spread that the system needs to be able to survive.

For DAAS this means that when one data block is stored, 10 redundant blocks are calculated. These blocks are then stored on 10 different disks on a maximum number of servers (minimum of 3 different servers). In order to restore the data blocks, only 5 disks are required, meaning you can lose half your storage and still be fully operational. In the case of a disk or server failure, the system will automatically calculate additional redundant blocks until the policy is satisfied once more.
